Joanna Callaghan is an artist filmmaker and Professor of Filmmaking at the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom. She was born and bred in Newcastle and grew up in Singleton in the Hunter Region.
Visiting Fellowship
In 2017, she commenced a visiting fellowship in the School of Creative Industries at University of Newcastle. She began research and development on her own family history growing up in the Hunter Region.
Her father, Terry Callaghan, worked in the mining industry as a washery manager. His great love is in local history and researched the area. See: http://www.terrycallaghan.com
Use of historic film “We Live In This Valley” (1962)
Back in London, in 2019, to assist in her documentary, Cultural Collections (now Special Collections) in the Auchmuty Library provided her with an IMX50 format version of the digitised historic film “We Live in this Valley” (1962) by Douglass Baglin.
Record (2020) now released
Her original project has now been released.
Record (2020), is her latest documentary and film essay about holding on, and letting go, Record asks how we make sense of the past through what we record and keep, what we make and share.
International Online Screening
An international online screening will take place through the Menzies Institute at Kings College Londond on 18th November at 8pm with a live Q & A.
It will be available for 14 days after the screening to watch anywhere in the world.
