“Dorothy Hewett Centenary Celebration” (Joe Flood and Marilla North)
Family, friends and colleagues recently came together to recognise the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dorothy Hewett who was one of Australia’s groundbreaking poets, playwrights and novelists. She was also an activist and strong feminist. Her eldest son, Joe Flood, recounts the celebration events held in the Blue Mountains, and her ties with Newcastle.

Hot Topic NAIDOC Week Discussion : Yirannali: The Quiet Project Discussion
Last June’s Hunter Living Histories Showcase featured Professor Nancy Cushing and her colleagues providing background on their “Talking Back to Monuments” public seminar. You can view it here: Showcase Guests Presentation 2 (June 2023): “Raise Your Voice: Talking Back to Monuments” (Assoc. Prof Nancy Cushing, Mr Nikolas Orr, Dr Irene Perez Lopez)
Their public seminar really brought home the negative impact that community public monuments have on First Nations peoples. It makes them feel unwelcome in their own country. The Yirannali: The Quiet Project has been 11 years in the making and is a real opportunity for Newcastle to be a world leader in redressing and promoting First Nations narratives embodied in public art and sculpture, against the plentiful narratives celebrating colonists and colonisation’s historical objectives.
