The Free Workshop Performance will be held in the Brennan Room, Shortland Building, on the Newcastle Callaghan Campus on Wednesday 6 November 2024 at 4PM. All Welcome. Dr Caulfield says: “T-Shirts Available Soon!”
Dr Caulfield’s Research
Dr Caulfield, our University’s 2024 Creative in Residence, is sponsored by the Vera Deacon Regional History Fund.
Since the announcement in June 2024 Dr Caulfield has been busily researching the life and times of convict artist Joseph Lycett.
He’s read the rare books and historic texts held in Special Collections of the Auchmuty Library.
Conversations with descendants of Newcastle’s Awabakal people, First Nations Academic historians and playwrights, art historians, curators, linguists, Lycett specialists and anyone else who could shed some light on who Joseph Lycett was as a somewhat flawed human being and creative artist, were also conducted.

The Reformation of Joseph Lycett

Dr Caulfield’s “Work-in-Progress” Workshop piece is called The Reformation of Joseph Lycett, and represents a series of dramatic vignettes that depict Lycett’s time here in Newcastle from 1815-1818.
Through his beautiful paintings, Lycett documented the lives and customs of the Aboriginal peoples of this Region.
All this took place under the watchful eye of Newcastle’s Penal Settlement commandant, Captain James Wallis.
