(now covering the Hunter Valley)

Several years ago, Newcastle historian Lachlan Wetherall created a visual index of old real estate sales plans. The focus was Newcastle maps. This has been an excellent resource for people doing family history research or those simply wanting to know about the place where they currently reside.

2026 Upgrade

As of 2026 Lachlan has located a further 600 plans and linked them onto Google maps. There are some for Aberdeen, Dartbrook, Segenhoe, Denman, Wingen and a few other Upper Hunter areas. This Visual Index draws together over 2400 plans which are held in four online collections: University of Newcastle Special Collections, Newcastle Libraries Hunter Photobank, State Library NSW and National Library of Australia.

Thank You Lachlan Wetherall

Lachlan Wetherall has created a visual index in google maps, of the hundreds and hundreds of digitised Newcastle and Lake Macquarie sub division plans. It makes it so much easier locating whether we hold something in your neck of the woods rather than keyword searching. Imagine if a similar thing could be done with TROVE articles relating to people and place?
