Dr Jim Wafer recently came across some material held by State Archive and Records New South Wales (SARA) consisting of three survey maps of sections of Lake Macquarie, drawn by surveyor J. Today we celebrate #InternationalNursesDay with this photo from the archives of Matron Agnes Hilda Porter, a dedicated nurse in the Hunter Region. 

Born in East Maitland in the 1890s, she devoted her life to serving the sick and injured across various Hunter Valley hospitals. She was also Matron of the Royal Newcastle Hospital, retiring in 1960.

These photographs were taken by Alexander Galloway (1876 - 1945), who had photographic studios in Cessnock, Kurri Kurri, Maitland and Weston, NSW. 

The images were scanned from original glass negatives held by the Coalfields Local History Association Inc.

On this May Day we are highlighting the Merv and J On this May Day we are highlighting the Merv and Janet Copley collection held by Special Collections. 

The Copley's played a significant role in the development of the Newcastle Unionist Movement from the 1940s to the early 2000s. 

The collection includes ephemeral material such as pamphlets, leaflets and election material, newspaper clippings, autobiographical writings, diaries, background research material, and photographic slides.

Members of the AWAS took defence roles on the home front as drivers, service police, cooks, typists, signallers, and cipher clerks for the duration of the war.
