Today we celebrate Margaret Senior (1917-1995). Her art brought awareness and inspiration to preserve and sustain our natural heritage.

Much of her work was commissioned for the NSW Fauna Protection Panel (1948-1967) and some were later published by its successor agency, the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (1967-2003) including fire prevention posters.

She was also well known for her work illustrating diseases of plants, which are still used in publications produced by NSW Department of Primary Industries today.

The intriguing selection of prints, photographs and regalia narrate the activities of Fraternal Societies in the Hunter region and beyond from the late 19th to early 20th centuries. These organisations helped to shape what we know today as our welfare system.

The exhibition will close on the 17th of June.

#NationalReconciliationWeek challenges us to #BeBrave, #MakeChange and tackle the unfinished business of reconciliation. This week we acknowledge those who have contributed to the ongoing journey towards reconciliation and social justice.

From the Copley Collection:

📸 Dexter Daniels was the Aboriginal Organiser for the North Australian Workers Union fighting for equal pay for Aboriginal Stockmen. He was a central figure in the Newcastle Waters Strike and the Gurindji/Wave Hill walk-off beginning in 1966. Dexter was also the first Aboriginal Executive of the Darwin Branch of the ALP, 1968.

📸 Darwin's May Day Parade, 1966. Holding the banner is author Frank Hardy. Frank travelled to Darwin where he was immediately confronted by the treatment of Aboriginal people and quickly added his support to Dexter Daniels and the struggle for equal pay.
