Save Blackbutt: The Case Against State Highway 23 Violating Blackbutt Reserve

PDF: Save Blackbutt: The Case Against State Highway 23 Violating Blackbutt Reserve

On the 2nd of August, 1966, at a meeting of Newcastle City Council, the Department of Main Roads announced its intention to take State Highway No. 23 through a portion of Blackbutt Reserve.

This is a case against the proposal to take an expressway, namely State Highway No. 23, through Newcastle and through a portion of Blackbutt Reserve. it is also a case to show that the proper location fort the expressway is west of Lake Macquarie and Newcastle.

  1. Gionni,
I am pleased that you were able digitise the Blackbutt Action Group Case Against Highway 23 Violating Blackbutt Reserve. Newcastle has two of the most important historic Conservation victories. The Blackbutt victory and the 1854 prevention of Nobbys Headland from being blown up by gunpowder. (Probably Australias first Conservation victory)

I would be grateful if you would kindly redigitise the last page with the signatures of the Committee members at the Victory Picnic so that the historic date is visible. Note that Peter Morris MHR was at the picnic. Peter was the Federal Minister for Transport at the time when it was decided to construct the National Highway to the west of Lake Macquarie making it unnecessary to construct Highway 23 through Blackbutt Reserve.

  2. Hi Doug,
Thanks for pointing out the final page, we have re-digitised so that the date is now visible. These documents were digitised and uploaded by Jessica G one of our student volunteers in the new GLAMx Lab, she is working on heritage/conservation sources.
