And the best way we can do that is to show you some assorted Christmas cards from our lovingly preserved collection. The second postcard actually shows an image of King Street in Raymond Terrace as it looked circa 1920! We’ll be taking a little break from our regularly scheduled posts, but we’ll be back in January to bring you even more amazing artefacts from our history. Stay safe, everyone!

We’re bringing you even more holiday cheer with We’re bringing you even more holiday cheer with these photos of the 1988 Christmas Carols held in Rotary Park, Kurri Kurri. The photos were taken by the late Percy Sternbeck (1921 - 2004), a council employee and keen photographer who lived in Kurri Kurri with his wife, Doreen. Percy’s collection was passed on to the Coalfields Local History Association Inc, based at the Sir Edgeworth David Memorial Museum.

The photos above are a throwback to a Christmas pa The photos above are a throwback to a Christmas party held by the Lamp & Glass Works social club in the 1960s! The original images come from an album containing all Lamp and Glass Works social club activities and 25 year service presentations from 1961 - 1969. This album was provided to us courtesy of the archive of the Electric Lamp Manufacturers Australia Pty Ltd (ELMA). ELMA, which operated in Clyde Street, Hamilton closed in 2002 after 71 years of production. It produced electric light bulbs including incandescent, fluorescent and environmentally friendly lights. At its peak, over 1000 workers were employed. We hope your holiday celebrations will be as joyous as this one!

Last Friday, we bid farewell to Archivist Dr Edwar Last Friday, we bid farewell to Archivist Dr Edward Bridle, known to many of you on the @uni_newcastle campus as The Dapper Gentleman. Edward has been a member of the UoN Special Collections team since 2002 and is known for his reputation as the best dressed person on our campus. He is also a passionate historian and a man of many layers, with interests ranging from medieval times to vampire slayers and anime. We thank Edward for his immeasurable contribution to Newcastle and it’s history, and wish him the best with all his future projects!

“Documenting the past is something that we do for the sake of the future. The future, after all, like the present, is built out of the past. If we want to know where we’re going, we need to know where we came from.” - Dr Edward Bridle

With this weekends scorching heat finally behind u With this weekends scorching heat finally behind us, we thought we’d share a throwback to one of Newcastle’s hottest summer events. We have a huge collection of stunning photographs taken from various Surfest events over the years. These images were taken by Chris Patterson from Hannan Photography during the 1987 Surfest, held on November 14th - 22nd at Newcastle Beach. The event began as an initiative of the Newcastle City Council and was sponsored by BHP; it was also known to some as The BHP Steel International. The 1987 champions were Tom Carroll of the men’s division and Jodie Cooper of the women’s division.

We have a huge collection of stunning aerial photo We have a huge collection of stunning aerial photos taken across New South Wales, which have been generously donated to the UoN Geology Department and passed on to our Cultural Collections division. The photos above show the Cessnock area and were taken in June 1979, by an unknown photographer. These images are a fascinating and almost otherworldly look at the Hunter's geography, and the full collection can be viewed on the UoN Cultural Collections Flickr page.

This rare 16mm colour film of Newcastle celebratin This rare 16mm colour film of Newcastle celebrating during Victory in the Pacific (VP) Day in 1945 was originally silent footage. However, @uni_newcastle student Joshua Webb created an entire soundscape to reconstruct what this footage may have sounded like at the time! The audio was created as part of Joshua’s Creative Industries Major Project, first constructing the base ambience (crowds, street ambience), then identifiable sounds (off-screen or sounds you can see but are far away), and lastly key sounds (sounds that are close to the camera and important to the narrative). The original creator of the film is unidentified, but the footage was donated to Greg and Sylvia Ray in 2019 by Mrs Vera Findlay of Greta. Greg and Sylvia Ray donated the original 16mm film to Cultural Collections, Auchmuty Library of the University of Newcastle in January 2020. Congratulations to Josh for creating such a powerful and effective work, which makes the original footage all the more meaningful.

The Adolphe was one of the most infamous shipwreck The Adolphe was one of the most infamous shipwrecks in Newcastle’s history. Sailing in from Antwerp on September 30th 1904, the ship attempted to enter port alongside two tugboats at around 9:00am. However, huge seas struck the ship from the southern breakwater and caused the Adolphe to strike the remains of another ship, the Colonist, before landing on what was then called the Oyster Bank. A lifeboat was launched and, with thousands of spectators watching, the thirty-two men on board were rescued within half an hour. The photos above are part of the collection of Ross and Pat Craig, two local historians who were passionate about preserving the history of Stockton and the Hunter and generously gave us access to their material.

Throughout her life, the late Jean Lorrell Guihot Throughout her life, the late Jean Lorrell Guihot (1927-2017) kept an extensive collection of scrapbooks documenting the history of Newcastle and the Hunter through her eyes. Each scrapbook contains newspaper articles, columns, advertisements and photos that all caught Mrs Guihot's eye, from an article about a serial gnome kidnapper to a clipping about 'Health tips for lonely eaters.' She was also an avid history buff - many of the scrapbook clippings featured events from Newcastle's history, such as the wreck of a steamship known as 'The Victor' in 1866. Mrs Guihot's eclectic collection of scrapbooks were generously provided by her husband, Eugene Guihot, and then digitised by our volunteers in the GLAMx Lab. Mrs Guihot's scrapbooks give us a charming and insightful look into the big and small events from the Hunter's history, and can be viewed in full on our website.
