My Dad (now deceased) flew Spitfires in England during WW2. His name was Hugh Charles Bastian and he gained the rank of Flight Lieutenant. He trained at Amberley and flew to England via Canada. His brother Harry Bastian was also in the RAAF but was captured by the Germans in Africa I think and has written a brilliant book about his career in the Air Force. I can contact his family if you are interested. Best wishes. ps they were both living in Boatman’s Row in Newcastle East. G’father Bastian was chief Carpenter in the Port of Newcastle and was responsible for the renowned lifeboat ‘The Victoria’?
