In the State Library of New South Wales is held an album of 37 watercolour and pencil drawings by Edward Charles Close that was a gift to his daughter Marrianne Collison Close on the 17th February 1844. Today we celebrate #InternationalNursesDay with this photo from the archives of Matron Agnes Hilda Porter, a dedicated nurse in the Hunter Region. 

Born in East Maitland in the 1890s, she devoted her life to serving the sick and injured across various Hunter Valley hospitals. She was also Matron of the Royal Newcastle Hospital, retiring in 1960.

The Copley's played a significant role in the development of the Newcastle Unionist Movement from the 1940s to the early 2000s. 

The collection includes ephemeral material such as pamphlets, leaflets and election material, newspaper clippings, autobiographical writings, diaries, background research material, and photographic slides.
