National Heritage Nomination for Coal River and Convict Lumber Yard [Download] The Coal River Working party has proudly completed and submitted its National Heritage Nomination for the Coal River Precinct and Convict Lumber Yard. Barrallier Plan 1801
10th August 2006. Barrallier’s ‘Lost’ Map Found. A translation of a letter from Francis Barrallier to Governor King has inadvertently solved a ‘mystery’ relating to a map recently located by Doug Lithgow on a microcard (BT36 Image 0072) in the Mitchell Library. We believe it to be the same map that Barrallier made for King, and that the Historical Records of New South Wales editor believed was ‘lost’. See a rough photocopy scan of it here. Barrallier says, “I have the honour to send you via the schooner [a map of] the entrance to the river, and some of the adjacent parts, which I have drawn up since we arrived, with the relevant depths, rocks, sandbanks and its various coal mines that have been discovered to date.” This is exciting stuff! We have written to the Original Materials Branch at the Mitchell Library, State Library of NSW to ascertain where the original is held, it could mean another hunt through the records in London. Emeritus Professor Ken Dutton kindly translated Francis Barrallier’s 24 June 1801 letter (in French) to Governor King entitled ‘Ensign Barrallier to Governor King’ (King Papers.), H.R.N.S.W., Vol.IV, pp.413-414. The transcription and translation is located on the Coal River website in the historical documents section here.
