The two stunning, hand-coloured copper engravings The two stunning, hand-coloured copper engravings featured above were etched by Walter Preston, an Englishman working in Newcastle in the early 19th century. The first work was completed in 1820, and is titled simply 'Newcastle, Hunter's River, New South Wales.' In fact, you might recognise it for being featured as the cover of Mark Dunn’s wonderful new book The Convict Valley! The second artwork is titled 'Corroboree, or Dance of the Natives of New South Wales,' and is believed to have been completed the same year. Unfortunately, not much else is known about Walter Preston other than that he was born in 1777 and worked in Australia from 1812 onwards. However, his beautiful artworks have helped immortalise the Awakabal people and the stunning landscape of the time. They are now held by the National Gallery of Victoria, and were featured in the 2011 Wondrous Land Exhibition.

This collection of photographs is from Epping-base This collection of photographs is from Epping-based photographer Arthur Perry and depict the final years of the Newcastle Tram System between 1947 - 1950. The tram line started service in 1887 and operated between the Newcastle and Wallsend areas, beginning with steam trams which were eventually upgraded on most lines to electric trams in the 1920s. However by 1950, the Newcastle tram system faced closure for various reasons, with the Wallsend Line seeing its final service in June of that year. While the trams were gone, places such as the Newcastle Depot at Hamilton were still used as a hub for the local buses. The memorial which stood in front of the depot still exists today. This collection was kindly loaned to us by John Perry and put together thanks to the hard work of one of our volunteer digitisation officers, Ashleigh Miller!

These images depict a coal train that derailed on These images depict a coal train that derailed on the 29th of May 1982 near Kurri-Kurri after tragically running over some cattle in the area. The coal train was identified as SMR Locomatives 17 & 31. The photos also show the subsequent recovery efforts of the Department of Railways Emergency Unit the following day, as well as onlookers investigating the wreckage thereafter. The images were scanned from 35mm colour slides kindly supplied by Phillip Lockett, whose family worked in the timber industry in the lower Hunter Valley.

The photos above offer an amazing view of sailing The photos above offer an amazing view of sailing ships off Stockton in 1906 and are part of the expansive Ross & Pat Craig Collection, currently held by UON Cultural Collections. Ross and Pat generously provided Hunter Living Histories with access to their extensive photographic library, which depicted Newcastle and the Hunter region throughout most of the 20th century. In fact, the entire collection has an astonishing total of over 5,000 photographs from the area! It's always astounding how many historians and community members are dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of our region.

These excerpts are from the circa 1900 booklet 'Ju These excerpts are from the circa 1900 booklet 'Just A Word' advertising Dr Morse's Indian Root Pills, a herbal medicine that boasted cures for eczema, liver diseases, "female ailments," and pretty much everything you can think off! The booklet includes an array of stories about the Indian Root Pills overcoming traditional medicine to treat various illnesses, almost all of which had left doctors stumped and patients despairing. The pills were originally launched in North America by William Henry Comstock, and became one of the most popular medicines available throughout the 19th and 20th centuries by claiming to treat almost all diseases by purifying and cleansing the blood. Despite being sold by William Henry Comstock II's widow following his death in 1959, the brand continued to be manufactured under a subsidiary in Australia and New Zealand up until 1992. Please note that the Hunter Living Histories team do not endorse Dr Morse and his Indian Root Pills, or the now liquidated Comstock family medicine business.

These geological plans of the Newcastle region wer These geological plans of the Newcastle region were created by BHP and donated to the @uni_newcastle Geology Department in 1960! The plans are actually dye-line prints that were regularly updated by BHP Coal Geology when necessary, and were scaled at 4 inches of plan-space for every mile covered. In total, each plan measured 105x76cm. The digital versions were scanned in 2017 by the late Russell Rigby, a local historian and valued GLAMx Lab volunteer.

Who remembers the grounding of The Sygna on Stockt Who remembers the grounding of The Sygna on Stockton Beach? The Norwegian bulk carrier was beached in May 1974 after ignoring a severe storm warning issued by the Bureau of Meteorology. Luckily, no one was injured or killed during the incident. The Sygna is infamous for remaining grounded on Stockton Beach after numerous attempts to re-float the ship were unsuccessful. It remained visible from the beach until 2016, when heavy storms submerged what was left of the wreckage. Our thanks go to Camille Brogi for editing and uploading the footage above!

Did you know that Queen Elizabeth II has visited N Did you know that Queen Elizabeth II has visited Newcastle more than once? In April 1970, the Queen visited the Carrington dockyard to christen a ship, where the footage above was captured. Elizabeth was accompanied by Prince Philip and Princess Anne. Her stop in Newcastle was part of an extensive tour of Australia by the royals, in honour of the bi-centenary of Captain James Cook’s journey up the East Coast of Australia in 1770. The Carrington dockyard operated from 1942 to 1987, closing due to the cessation of large scale ship building. Our thanks go to Camille Brogi for editing and uploading this footage!

These stunning works were created by celebrated na These stunning works were created by celebrated natural history artist and children’s book illustrator Margaret Senior (1917-1955). Senior was born in London and eventually migrated to Australia in the 1940s, and is most known for her series of fire prevention posters completed for the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service. She was also recognised for illustrating children’s books in her early career, such as Eve Pownall’s Australia Book (1952) which became a nationally recognised hit. The above illustrations were contributed to the book ‘The Story of Kurri Kurri the Kookaburra’ (1948), written by Leslie Rees. Senior was generous enough to donate her collection of sketches and illustrations to the Hunter Living Histories team, where they can now be enjoyed by anyone across the world on our digital platforms.
