These photos show the sinking of the SS Guthrey in These photos show the sinking of the SS Guthrey in December 1913. The Guthrey hit a rock while travelling through the Paterson River sometime in December 1913. The third image shows a rowboat paddling out to inspect the sinking steamboat. These original glass slides were created by Clifford Lyons (1909-1988) and digitised in our state of the art GLAMx Digitisation Lab. The images above shows the flooding of King Street The images above shows the flooding of King Street, Raymond Terrace that occurred in May 1913. The Morris Hotel, The Gloucester Examiner, W H Paling & Co Ltd and W. W. Hassard buildings are visible, as are H. Moore Chemist & Optician in closeup. The flooding affected various parts of Raymond Terrace, but was severe enough on King Street that we can see several people kayaking over the flood waters! These images are scans from the glass slide collection of Clifford Lyons (1908-1988). The photos above were taken between 1905 and 1915 The photos above were taken between 1905 and 1915 by local photographer George Kelly, showing the Dungog area as it stood at this time. The photos were then turned into postcards which have been preserved by Mr Brian Adler and Mr Ian Clucas, who generously donated them to our archives. Each postcard is accompanied by a message from Dungog native Edie Kelly (daughter of George) to Miss Gertie Adler, a Hamilton local. This collection of glass plate negatives were take This collection of glass plate negatives were taken by the late Thomas James Rodoni who in the 1910s documented the local Newcastle beach scene, including Life Saving Club activities, swimming races at  Newcastle Baths  and people picnicking.  In 2014 Bill Rodoni, son of Thomas Rodoni donated all his father’s original glass negatives held in his possession to the University of Newcastle’s Special Collections. With this weekends start to the prestigious World With this weekends start to the prestigious World Surf League taking place Merewether Beach in Newcastle, NSW we thought we’d share Surfest photos from the archive. We have a huge collection of stunning photos taken from various Surfest events since 1985.These photos are courtesy of Warren Smith “Smithy” and Paul Scott and were taken in 1995’s Surfest at Newcastle Beach. The event began as an initiative of the Newcastle City Council and was sponsored by BHP; it was also known to some as The BHP Steel International. One of the forgotten issues in Newcastle history i One of the forgotten issues in Newcastle history is the problems with the shifting sands that threatened to engulf the town throughout the 19th century. There are more than 120 references to the “Newcastle sand drift” problem in articles in Newcastle Morning Herald between 1876 and 1900, mainly referring to the Cooks Hill/ Darby Street area. According to Russell Rigby’s research, the main areas of active sand dunes and drifts were northwards from Newcastle Beach to the harbour and inland from Bar Beach/Merewether Beach. Darby Street, known as 'Lake Road' in the 19th century, was known for being more or less impassable at times due to the sand drifts in the area. Both dune systems were partially stabilised using brush fences, showing why we need our coastal bush regeneration works to continue. The images above show a variety of plans to rectify the sand drift problems and artist renderings of Newcastle’s dunes; the first two were created by John Edward Newell Bull in 1850 and Conrad Martens in 1855 respectively. Featured above are photos of the Aberdare Central Featured above are photos of the Aberdare Central Colliery formerly based in the suburb of Kitchener, Cessnock. The Colliery was built from 1914-1917 during World War I and was operated by Caledonian Collieries Ltd., which was one of the largest employers in the area. While we don’t have the exact date of when each photograph was taken, we know that they were taken sometime between the colliery’s opening and its eventual closure in 1961. These images are from the collection of Carole Knott, who has kindly allowed us to publish them on our Living Histories platform. We thank Carole for her generosity and Barry Howard for forwarding these photos to us. These photos were taken during World War II (1939- These photos were taken during World War II (1939-1945) by Percy Haslam (1913-1987), and are held by the University of Newcastle's Culturual Collections division. Each photo gives a fascinating glimpse into life during the Second World War for the Allied Troops, and span locations such as Los Negros Island and the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea, and Bisley in the United Kingdom. These photographs were taken during the second Bri These photographs were taken during the second British Australian and New Zealand Antarctic Research Expedition. The expedition set sail for Antarctica from Hobart on November 22nd 1930, eventually returning home on March 19th 1931, and made various stops across its journey to places including the Curacao West Indies, Brazil, Monte Video, Cape Raoul, Storm Bay and several spots across Western Australia. The photos were donated to the Hunter Living Histories team in 2007 by Jim and Alexander Downie, but the original photographer on the voyage was only credited as 'Self.' After much research by Hunter Living Histories Chair Gionni Di Gravio, the photographer was eventually identified as William E Howard, a crew member on the ship 'Discovery’ and pictured in the third photo above.
