Bio: John “Stinker” Clarke is an avid fisherman and historian and alumnus of this University. He is a Port Stephens identity and has written many books on oyster farming and fishing in Port Stephens. He is also often heard throughout NSW on Regional ABC radio talking about local fishing, and has a regular column in the Port Stephens Examiner. More here: https://www.stinker.com.au/

Bio: Thomas Kelly, Lachie Passfield and Lachlan Mayfield are recent Media Production graduates from The University of Newcastle. The have created a short documentary on Teddy “The Jew Boy” Davis as a “proof of concept” for a longer documentary.

Since our last meeting on the 5 September 2022 which was a History Week event on hands on audio visual formats:

• • We lost Dr Jean Talbot, who passed away in August 2022. Jean was a committed wife, mother, Quaker, poet, lecturer, educator, environmentalist and activist. A tribute page for her is here: https://hunterlivinghistories.com/2022/08/19/jean-talbot/

• • Attention all Billionaires! • • (6 September 2022) 25^th Anniversary of Novocastrian Tales by author Paul F. Walsh OAM on the 5 September 1997. It was a special project, as contributions from the 40 authors and donors raised over $600,000 to create an Aboriginal accommodation centre in the grounds of the John Hunter Hospital. • • (7 September 2022) Dr Ben Champion’s Histories of the Newcastle Hospital 1815-1915 have been re-posted as a five volume set compiled beginning in 1815 and concluding in 1915 and spanning the first 100 years of the Newcastle Hospital’s existence.Many thanks to the late Dr. Ben Champion in preparing these massive works, and also to Auchmuty Library staff member and volunteer Karen Moller for undertaking the task of digitising the thousands of pages of text under the supervision of Dr Ann Hardy in the GLAMx Lab that has also written on the history of Healthcare in Newcastle. • • (8/9/2022) – History Illuminated Lake Macquarie Libraries Event: Screening of Biraban and Threlkeld Stories of Our Town Film and QandA

• • • (13 September 2022) Dr Paula Jane Byrne who presented at the Hunter Living Histories August 2022 Showcase https://hunterlivinghistories.com/2022/07/29/hlh-aug2022/ prepared this HLH post on the Material Life on the Hunter an interesting examination of the words and imagery around material objects such as furniture, wallpaper, cooking and dining implements, clothing, games, that formed part of life of people living in the Colonial period living on the Hunter.
