Decolonising Digital Collections: a community-led approach

United Services Club Call for Assistance.

We are especially interested in the following: (Sue Britton)

  1. Labeling. We have managed to catalogue the collection, thanks to Janet A., but now need extensive assistance to label all items with their accession number. This is protracted work that requires accuracy but is a simple process we will explain to volunteers.
  2. Storage. We are in dire need of storage for archived items. Any group offering older storage items as they replace them, would be friends for life! We currently have a number of photographs that need correct storage – even a map drawer would help. Is the group aware of a storage facility that may “donate” a storage area? Or a furniture exchange.
  3. Significance Assessment/Valuation. We also want to store items correctly. As we have so many, we wonder if anyone is available to help us assess those items that are valuable and need to be dealt with ASAP. This will also help us with insurance and valuing the collection.
  4. Grants. I am aware of the grants section of the Newcastle Council website but wonder if anyone has found a particularly useful site, grants body or sponsor?
  5. Collection/ Museum Training for the committee would be useful. This is especially the case with preservation and conservation as well as IT. We did have a connection with the Singleton Artillery Museum but he has since moved on.
  6. Gaps. Identifying gaps in the collection. We are especially aware of post WWII gaps but are less aware of the role Newcastle has played lately.
  7. Art Curator. We have a great deal of art and photographs but no real concept of their rarity, relevance to our mission statement, or their need for conservation.
  8. Management. Ideas for a fledgling group. We have a policy and catalogue and we are developing a procedures manual but any advice/ expertise in setting up museums and or security issues would be much appreciated.
