NBN Television Newsnight, 1988 (BETACAM 21)

This Newsnight tape is part of the NBN Television archive and was digitised by our first UON Communication student Tom Sinclair who undertook a WIL (work integrated learning) practicum in the GLAMx Living Histories Digitisation Lab in September 2017. Many thanks to Phillip Lloyd and Barry Nancarrow (former NBN Television staff) who are digitising various forms of material from 1988, including BVU tapes, Index cards and listing items as they are appeared in the ‘Newsnight’ series footage. In total 28 taped stories from “Newsnight” current affairs and cued sheets were digitised and scanned.

00:08 – 2:35 – About the Exhibition traveling around Australia. The arrival and setting up of the tents for the exhibition. For the enjoyment of every Australian. Dated: 5/9/12
02:46 – 03:05 – The Mirage Jet. Dated; 6/9/1988
03:26 – 05:55 – The Mirage Jet developed by the French in the late 1950’s. Australia decided to buy 100 for our Air Force in 1963; we have 60 Jets at Williamtown priced at $1,500,000 each. None of the mirage Jets have seen active duty, but we have still had losses totalling 47 over the past 24years. Some of these losses involved pilots at Williamtown in August 1976, a trainee pilot and his instructed had a lucky escape when the front wheel malfunctioned; both were force to eject and the plane crash into bushland. In 1982 a jet crash in tidal flats near Port Stephens once again an under carriage problem force the pilot to ditch the jet. In 1985, a mirage flown disappear over the Stockton area never to be seen again. In 1987, a young pilot ditch his plane in the ocean. The mirage is now moving over for the impressive new FA18’s. 13:12 – 17:51  – Report about the Political immigration from Romania. The Romanian Discus Thrower and her coach came to Australia and are living in Mayfield with friends. Dated: 13/10/1988
18:05 – 18:32 – John Church is talking to a person about keeping Rats as pets. 25/10/1988
18:42 – 19:37 – Film on a plane crash then about the Army. (No Sound). Dated: 25/10/1988
19:48 – 20:46 – Premier Greiner and Bob Carr visit the Port Stephens electorate ahead of the election. Dated:
