NBN Television Newsnight, 1988 (BETACAM 16)

This Newsnight tape is part of the NBN Television archive and was digitised by our first UON Communication student Tom Sinclair who undertook a WIL (work integrated learning) practicum in the GLAMx Living Histories Digitisation Lab in September 2017. Many thanks to Phillip Lloyd and Barry Nancarrow (former NBN Television staff) who are digitising various forms of material from 1988, including BVU tapes, Index cards and listing items as they are appeared in the ‘Newsnight’ series footage. In total 28 taped stories from “Newsnight” current affairs and cued sheets were digitised and scanned.

00:10 – 0.19 – Reporter John Church talks with Alderman Ivan Welsh on his view on proposed cuts to teaching in NSW. Alderman Welsh is opposed to them & that it disadvantages people from his electorate, Teachers & children. Children should not be taking action. Dated: 26/7/1988

01:10 – 02.07 – Protest Civic Park – crowd noise & talking. High School children and adults. Female High school student talking from the back of a truck about the marking system for the H.S.C. – double marking and issues that may arise from the change. Dated: 26/7/1988

06:16 – 07.25 – Reporter John Church – Study shows Student numbers moving away from Govt. schools towards private schools. Minister for Education Dr Tim Metherell formula for schools – reduce number of teachers, increase class sizes, drop special interest subjects & place more emphasis on academic subjects. His actions caused students to protest & industrial action from teachers, Concern from P&C association. Education has become a political hotspot. Premier Nick Greiner says they will talk with teachers, students. Dated 26/7/1988

08:16 – 10.41 – Female reporter – Thomas Skottoe’s Manuscripts – part time Naturalist who was sent to Newcastle, 1813 to oversee 138 convicts. He drew from observation the flora and fauna of the local area – in an unusual way – not very accurate drawings, he talks about how he feels and the edible quality of the animals. Musical background. Dated: 2/8/1988
10:54 – 11.56 – Reporter Laurie Oakes – Retirement/resignation of Bill Hayden & Govt. reshuffle by Prime Minister Bob Hawke. Gareth Evans replaces Bill Hayden, Ralph Willis replaces Mr Evans, Peter Morris-Industrial Relations, Robert Reay into Immigration, Clive Holding dropped. Dated:
12:09 – 17:04 – Female reporter- English Singer Leo Sayer. Taking a new direction, after being divorced & management change. He is now his own manager& producer. Newcastle concert. Talking about healthy music scene in Australia. Enjoys
motorsports and real name is Gerard Sayer. Plays to end with one of his Video clips. Dated: 23/8/1988
17:17 – 22.24 – Female Reporter – Breast Cancer screening bus, Newcastle Mater Hospital, 1st of its kind in Australia & fully equipped to take Mammograms. Taking breast screening into the community, saving thousands of women’s lives through early detection. The Govt. has given 1/3rd of the cost & 2/3rd of the cost has come as part of the Bicentenary Project from NBN Newcastle, cost $300,000, the bus is totally customised & with most up to date medical equipment in the world. Will travel across the Hunter area for the next 2 yrs. examining people. Professor John Forbes, Oncologist – Mater Hospital. Peter Collins – Health Minister, full support of program. 10,000 tests a year and expanding over the years, another 2-3 buses in the next 4/5 yrs. The Hunter is at the forefront of this type of technology in Australia. Dated: 13/9/1988
