This Newsnight tape is part of the NBN Television archive and was digitised by our first UON Communication student Tom Sinclair who undertook a WIL (work integrated learning) practicum in the GLAMx Living Histories Digitisation Lab in September 2017. Many thanks to Phillip Lloyd and Barry Nancarrow (former NBN Television staff) who are digitising various forms of material from 1988, including BVU tapes, Index cards and listing items as they are appeared in the ‘Newsnight’ series footage. In total 28 taped stories from “Newsnight” current affairs and cued sheets were digitised and scanned.

00:08 – 05:10 – John Church interviews a man about the tax audit system. The changes in the tax audit. They talk about the powers of information act, and how these powers can affect people. If people refuse to co-operate there are powers that they can use. Dated: 21/6/1988
05:21 – 05:49 – An interview with a nurse who was concerned about a patient and hygiene. The nursing staff was being very careful in regards to washing their hands etc. The visitors where not and this was very concerning for staff. Dated: 21/6/1988

09:30 – 16:16 – A report on Asthma and how the Ambulance Service is called out to emergencies. There are more and more people having Asthma attacks. There is a 400 % increase in Asthma in the past two years. This increase was caused through environment and people not using their medications correctly. About 1 in 10 people suffer Asthma. 16:30 – 19:57 – A report on the Referendum vote that is taking place at the weekend. There are four questions about changes to our constitution. Question 1. 4-year maximum terms for members of both houses of the Commonwealth Parliament. Yes, case argues Australia has too many cost elections, No, case argues say it does not guarantee an election and it will give Canberra more power over the states. Question 2. Fair and democratic parliamentary election throughout Australia. Yes, case claim the present constitution does not give everyone the right to vote. No, case claims this is a Canberra power grab. Question 3. Recognise local government. Yes, case argues that it will prevent state governments replacing councils with administrators No, case claims this will give Canberra an interfering foot in the door and more power given to the federal government at the expense of the state. Question 4. Trial by Jury. Freedom of Religion Fair compensation Yes, case states that the defences against state and territory laws are not guarantee trial by jury and that property resumed by government is given no rights of compensation and there freedom of religion. No, case argues it is an all or nothing choice and Australians are being rob of the rights of freedom. The vote on Saturday people can decide to vote for the questions the way they want. 20:06 – 23:36 – Two Hunter valley housewives have invented a product that is successful. It is called the Slopper Stoper It stops the juice from the tetra pack being squeezed out as you drink. This product has other uses to as they found out as building blocks. The product is local. Now they are seeing if they can market their product overseas. And perhaps the regions better-known product is the Snow Bee it has been manufactured for 7 years now, it has develop a market overseas. The Hunter Inventors group is getting together and helping each other.
