NBN Television Newsnight, May 17, 1988 (BETACAM 7)

This Newsnight tape is part of the NBN Television archive and was digitised by our first UON Communication student Tom Sinclair who undertook a WIL (work integrated learning) practicum in the GLAMx Living Histories Digitisation Lab in September 2017. Many thanks to Phillip Lloyd and Barry Nancarrow (former NBN Television staff) who are digitising various forms of material from 1988, including BVU tapes, Index cards and listing items as they are appeared in the ‘Newsnight’ series footage. In total 28 taped stories from “Newsnight” current affairs and cued sheets were digitised and scanned.

01:05 – 01:26 – The sentencing of Ivan in court. With cries of the death penalty from the onlookers.
01:37 – 02:04 – Report on the Family Law Court. Helen Morse about her latest role in a local production.
02:15 – 02:53 – A clip from a play.
03:04 – 09:01 – Floods in Lake Macquarie due to drainage issues. Interviews with Member for Charlestown Richard Face and Lake Macquarie Mayor Ivan Welsh about who might be responsible.
09:12- 09:39 – Report about the Coal Industry in the Hunter.
09:53 – 12:11 – A Quartet playing music for schoolchildren.
12:24 – 13:06 – Report on the ship Britannia that visited Newcastle.
13:17 – 14:26 – The Queen Elizabeth II visit to Newcastle.
14:43 – 15:59 – Report about the ‘Spruce Goose’.
16:10 – 21:33 – John Church reports on the full size model of the Space Shuttle built in Wickham for Japan. Paul Dewhurst and other State dockyards employees were involved.
21:46 – 23:48 – Marching Koalas in a parade
